Mick Roberts was born in Bulli Hospital, NSW Australia. He was educated in Bulli at St Joseph's Primary and Bulli High School. His pioneering research on the coaching inns and hotels of Illawarra, published as Little House on the Hill (1989) and The Local (1992), has quickly earned him a repuation as the most original non-academic historian of his generation and an authority on the history of the liquor industry in Australia. His creative use of untapped documentary sources in these two books has already been taken up by academic researchers within universities. Mick also contributed largely and forwarded the book, True North (2001), published to mark the centenary of Federation in Australia. The book features many of his history features from local newspapers. As a foundation member of the Black Diamond District Heritage Centre at Bulli Railway Station, Mick has also been at the forefront of the fight to preserve the district's heritage. Until recently, his regular column and his many feature articles as a journalist with Wollongong newspapers have earned him a reputation as one of the most influential and widely read public historians working in local studies in Australia today. Mick currently works as a senior journalist with Torch Publishing.
